Avis was born in Grenada, and moved to Trinidad as a young girl. She came from humble beginnings, and therefore was only able to complete up to a sixth grade education. She worked as a child caregiver, often watching children from the neighborhood and helping local families with childcare. She raised two children of her own as a single mother. In her later years of life, Avis migrated to the United States to be closer to her children and their families. Avis was caring, selfless, kind, resilient and hardworking. She had a strong faith and was passionate about helping others whenever she could. She sacrificed a lot, and was a mother and caregiver to many who had the honor of knowing her. Avis always stressed the importance of receiving a good education, often saying an education "will help you be successful in life." To her credit, all of her children and grandchildren have obtained graduate degrees.
